Mental Health Kokua - Residential Services


Population Served
MHK’s community housing programs served single adults with serious mental illness and is consistent with CARF standards to provide a “highly structured residential environment where the primary goals are the treatment of behavioral health needs and the fostering of personal growth leading to personal accountability” (CARF).
 
Settings

Safe Haven. For persons who are homeless and have a mental illness Safe Haven offers outreach, medical and psychiatric care, case management, 24-hour residential services, and social rehabilitation activities. Mental Health Kokua works collaboratively with the community and Continuum of Care, operating this unique project in downtown Honolulu, with similar models in Maui and Kona.

Therapeutic Living Program (TLP).  Licensed by the State Office of Health Care Assurance (OHCA), TLP is designed as an immediate, short-term alternative to institutionalization for single adults with mental illness, usually stepping down from, and/or diversion from the Hawaii State Hospital. TLP services include community placement, access to clinical care, and linkage to needed community resources. TLP programs are located on Oahu.

Transitional Residential Resources.  Serving single adults with mental illness, Mental Health Kokua offers supervised group residential facilities and individualized services in transitional housing settings. MHK programs in this category serve consumers located on Oahu, Hilo, Kona, Maui, and Kauai.
 
Hours of Service 
24-Supervised Living:                              Supervision 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Semi-Supervised Living:                         Supervision 8-16 hours per day, with 24-hour on call.
Semi-Independent Living:                      Supervision minimal on-site supervision, with 24-hour on call.
Supported Housing (Housing First):   Supervision as needed, with 24-hour on call.
 
Frequency of Services
Services are provided at least 3 hours per day, 3 days per week.
 
Payer Sources
Payer source is the State of Hawaii Dept. of Health – Adult Mental Health Division (DOH-AMHD), HUD, and local County governments.
 
Fees
MHK provides the services maintaining the HUD standards of charging the resident 30% of his/her income.
